A day after the execution of Ajmal Amir Kasab was carried out in Pune’s Yerawada Central Prison, state Home officials are in discussions with Central government officials whether his death certificate should be forwarded to his family in Pakistan.

Kasab, the lone terrorist to have been captured alive from a batch of 10 that carried out the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was hanged on Wednesday morning and buried at a secret location inside the jail.

There has been no request so far at the embassy level to hand over Kasab’s death certificate to his family in Pakistan, said an official.

“We have the death certificate. What remains to be done is forward the death certificate to them, though there has been no such request from the embassy,” said a senior Maharashtra Home official. The Centre is yet to take a decision on it.

After death by hanging was confirmed, the death certificate was signed by the chief medical officer and the executive magistrate and forwarded to the metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai. “Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde stated that they had intimated the Pakistani officials via telegram and fax. They had not asked for the body. What remains is the death certificate that can be given to family members of Kasab,” said the senior government official.

Officials at Yerawada said though Kasab had no last wish, a day before he was hanged he had expressed a desire that his mother be informed of his execution. “He did mention it a day prior to the hanging. That was all. He had no other wish,’’ said an official.

Officials who were witness to the hanging said Kasab did not panic or break down even while he was being led to the gallows. Officials who executed the death sentence said the entire docket of the procedure has been forwarded by the jail authorities to the state government.

Government officials said they are willing to forward the death certificate, and are awaiting the Pakistan embassy to demand it to be delivered to relatives of Kasab.
