Kolkata The state government today booked People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) leader Chhatradhar Mahato under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Mahato is the second person to be booked under the UAPA after Gaur Chakraborty, the spokesperson of the CPI (Maoists).

“We have got enough evidence against Mahato that can establish the charges under the UAPA. So, we have given permission to the police to prosecute Mahato under the UAPA,” said state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen.

Meanwhile, state DGP Bhupindar Singh said that to derail the movement spearheaded by the PCAPA, the state police and the CID have turned focus on the corridor through which weapons and arms enter the state.

“We have increased vigil in the border areas. We have identified a few places that are used as a corridor of sending arms into the state. Moreover, the Maoists have trained some PCAPA members in making mines and home-made arms.

We will detain them for interrogation,” Singh said, adding the arms come from Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand, besides Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

In a related development, the CID today submitted a report to the state home department on Mahato’s interrogation and the information it has got from it.

“The report contains the statements Mahato made during the interrogation. The state home department will send it to the Union Home Ministry,” said Raj Kanojia, Additional Director-General, CID.

However, a senior CID official said, “Mahato is not cooperating with us.

He is changing his statements everyday. We will bring his driver Papan Mondal here (for questioning) very soon. We have specific information that he played a key role in the movement launched by the PCAPA and coordinated between the former and the Maoists.”

RIGHT DECISION by kuntal chowdhury on 06 Oct 2009

Sir west bengal govt. decision to book chhatradhar is completely right step. People who are raging war against our country mustbe prosecuted and those who are supporting this movement also be grilled. This step will send a strong signal to those terroist who are trying to disrupt normal life and causing maximum damage to human life and property. Even many intellectuals demand that mahato is a mass leader and it is a mass movement but killing of 70 people symboilise what type of movement is this?. The amount of money which mahato and his organisation have does not reflect that movement is for poor tribals. Maoist aristocracies should br dealt with strongly.
