Kolkata Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pranab Mukherjee will engage in a joint campaign for the Lok Sabha polls after April 16.

Banerjee is expected to share the dais with both Mukherjee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Jangipur on April 27.

Emerging out of a one-hour late night meeting with Mukherjee at a south Kolkata guest house today, Banerjee said: “I am ready to campaign jointly with both Pranabda and Soniaji in Jangipur. The CPM has unleashed a reign of error in the state and I have requested Pranabda to raise the matter with the Centre.” Mukherjee has also assured Banerjee it would be made mandatory for the Congress leaders to cooperate with the Trinamool at all levels after the latter complained of non-cooperation in some constituencies. The details of joint campaign, in which Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi will participate, were chalked out today.

Other issues like the impasse in Lalgarh and Darjeeling were also discussed in the meeting. Both parties forged their alliance and decided to share seats on March 1 when Banerjee and Mukherjee made a joint announcement in Kolkata. According to the tie-up, the Congress is contesting 14 seats, while the Trinamool in remaining 28.

“Pranabda has promised Mamata that the WBPCC will make it mandatory for Congress leaders to participate and cooperate in the joint campaign in all constituencies. And those who do not adhere to this will be punished,” said a senior Congress leader.

Banerjee raised the issue with Mukehrjee, saying Congress workers are not cooperating with their Trinamool counterparts in some constituencies including Krishnagar, Ranaghat, Kolkata North and Diamond Harbour seats. On April 27, Gandhi is scheduled to visit Bengal and hold rallies in Siliguri, Malda and Jangipur in Murshidabad. She is scheduled to address a rally in Kolkata after the first phase of elections. Banerjee will share the stage with her.
