Angry villagers with the body of Balwinder Singh block National Highway 1 on Thursday night

Ludhiana Four policemen — Assistant Sub-Inspector Varinder Chopra, Constable Gurtehal Singh, Havaldar Balbir Chand and Havaldar Gurdeep Singh — have been booked under Section 304 of the IPC following the death of one Balwinder Singh during a raid at illegal sand mining land at Talwandi village near Jalandhar Bypass on Thursday night.

As soon as word spread about the police raid, all the people started running, so did Balwinder. But his tractor turned turtle in a hurry, and he fell and died on the spot.

Following the incident, villagers from surrounding areas gathered in large numbers to lodge their protest. They demanded sacking of police personnel who were involved in the raid.

The high drama continued for more than three hours at midnight and the angry villagers damaged a few village roads. They blocked the NH-1 for about three hours. It was only after the visit of senior police officers, including Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh, that the mob dispersed.

On Friday too, tight police security was seen at Jalandhar bypass. Even post-mortem of the body was conducted under tight police security in Civil Hospital, Ludhiana. The body was cremated in the afternoon.

Sand mining is banned and the operation conducted by the police was as per the High Court orders. The villagers were busy doing illegal sand mining, though the site had been banned for further mining.
