Kolkata The father of a new-born child has alleged his son was swapped with another child at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Rasheeda Begum, a 21-year-old resident of Dankuni, was admitted to the CMCH on April 8. Her husband, Sheikh Saha Dutt, alleged that his wife had undergone an operation on the advice of the doctors.

Dutt claimed that he had bought all the medicines as per the prescription of the doctors and administered to his wife. Later, when the child was born, Dutt claimed he was told by nurses that it was a boy and had to be admitted to the nursery as it was the case of a premature birth.“I even gave the nurses Rs 800 since they had asked for it. I was overjoyed at the birth of my son. However, I was denied the permission to see the child,” Dutt said.

However, on April 10, when the hospital authorities handed over the child to the mother, the parents discovered it was a female child. Dutt has now submitted a deputation to the police outpost at the hospital and also to the superintendent demanding an explanation. CMCH superintendent Anup Roy said he has launched a formal inquiry into the matter.
