Kolkata Leaflets circulated by Maoists in Murshidabad in West Bengal indicate that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is on the target list of the rebel outfit. Mukherjee, who is the Jangipur MP, frequents the district.

“We have recovered leaflets where a lot of things have been said. Some of them are about our Union minister. We are not taking any chances and security has been tightened in the district,” said Bharatlal Meena, District Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad.

According to the police, the leaflets were recently distributed in different parts of the district and are signed by Madhab, a member of CPI(Maoist) Zonal Committee, Nadia, Burdwan and Murshidabad.

The document also mourns the death of a Maoist who was killed in August 30 blast in Behrampore, Murshidabad district, allegedly when a crude bomb he was making with an accomplice went off.

The duo was preparing the explosive to carry out a blast on the National Highway -34, said Meena. The ultras had also hatched a plan to bring about a shutdown in the district, he added.

However, the documents denied such allegations by the police. “Our intention was not to blow up private buses or blow up the NH-34 disconnecting the north from south Bengal,” the leaflet read.

The Maoists stated that they wanted to “wake up” Mukherjee and other ministers. The leaflet also said that Pranab Mukherjee, like two other persons running the country (Sonia Gandhi and P Chidambaram) is equally responsible for the so-called state-sponsored attacks on innocent people.
