According to ATS officials, Garg used to keep a copy of identity and address proof provided by genuine customers. He allegedly misused these documents to create fake papers to sell prepaid SIM cards to others without identity proofs. “We seized 50 SIM cards of Tata Docomo, 25 photographs and election identity cards from him,” said an ATS officer.
Garg was arrested under Sections 467 (forgery of valuable asset), 471 (using a forged document or electronic records as genuine) and 474 (having possession of forged document).
Police produced Garg, who hails from Madhavpur in Rajasthan, before Judicial Magistrate First Class S S Bose on Thursday to seek his custody.
Assistant public prosecutor A V Ausekar argued, “The police want to investigate whether the accused has sold any SIM card to persons belonging to terror outfits. The police are also on the lookout for more photographs and identity cards that were used to sell SIMs,” he told the court. The court remanded Garg in police custody till November 14.
Inspector Peter Lobo of Pune ATS said, “The interrogation of the suspect is on. We are trying to find whether there are more persons involved. We are also trying to find where and how the SIM cards were used.” ATS had earlier arrested a man from Pune for allegedly forging documents to buy SIM cards that were reportedly used for executing terror attacks in Mumbai.
