Pune Even after preparing more than 20 reports on city’s transport and traffic and spending lakhs of rupees, the Pune Municipal Corporation has now planned a ‘Sustainable Transport Strategy for Pune’, which will incorporate points from the previous transport plans, but revised as per the new development plan of Pune.

In order to achieve this, the civic administration has proposed appointment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Powai, as consultants to prepare the report by October 2009. The Rs 21-lakh project will also include a report on development of Traffic Model Software and its training. This proposal to appoint the IIT as consultant has come before the civic standing committee for approval.

Several transport studies have been executed recently, covering tram, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and metro rail all of which has been compiled into a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which was submitted to PMC in 2008.

“These plans are all valuable as they are the basis for considerations of the transport system development. They are also based on old land use plans and different estimations of the economic development. However, the CMP needs improvements in setting realistic objections, social, economic, environmental impact.

The work before IIT would be comprehensive compilation of relevant transport data and present a final report in October 2009 considering various factors and transport studies. It will also have to deliver sub-reports on transport and traffic data for Pune and traffic forecast within the municipal limit.
