New Delhi Moving to nail crime suspects, policemen deployed near city borders have started using tyre deflaters to try and stop speeding vehicles at night. According to police, tyre deflaters are thrown in front of vehicles, which ignore the ‘stop’ call.

The spikes on the deflaters puncture the tyres, bringing the vehicle to a halt.

Sources said Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar recently asked his men to keep an eye on crime suspects in border areas. Police have been troubled by gangs from Mewat, Haryana, who enter Delhi with the intention to rob.

This was one of the main points discussed during the inter-state coordination meeting held last month between senior police officers. A list of gangs from Mewat has been prepared by the Crime Branch.

In their internal report on gangs of Mewat, police observed that many criminals ignored the ‘stop’ call by police and also attacked police personnel. There have been instances of gangs hurling stones at police teams.

Police stations such as Najafgarh and those in Dwarka are using tyre deflaters. In police stations like Alipur and Burari, sources said, policemen carry an extra set of chain deflaters.

Last week, the Special Cell nabbed six members of the Sali gang of highway robbers. While the members of the gang were arrested from West Bengal, their kingpin Sali was nabbed from Ghazipur. Sali was carrying a reward of

Rs 1.65 lakh before he was arrested by the Special Cell.

Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) S N Srivastava said: “A few gangs attack police teams and flee. This particular gang, led by Sali, had been committing a robbery every alternate day. Police stations in border areas of Delhi are already carrying tyre deflater chains to ensure that the criminals do not go scot-free.”
