A call to the police control room and a quick response from the police team saved the life of a 20-year-old woman, who was going through a severe labour pain and later gave birth to a baby boy after she was rushed to a hospital. Both the mother and the baby were out of danger, police said.

At 3.09 pm, the police control room (PCR) received a call from one Ketan Lokhande who is a police constable attached with the police headquarters at Shivajinagar, but was not on duty at that time. He told the control room that a woman was lying on the roadside near a cycle store at some distance from the Samarth police station and was undergoing a severe labour pain. The call was attended by police constable P N Bansode who immediately alerted the on-duty control room officer assistant police inspector Vazir Shaikh.

Shaikh immediately alerted the patrolling team of Samarth police and instructed that a woman police staffer should accompany them. Assistant sub-inspector Anant Khot and woman police staffer Nirmala Gabale rushed to the spot and took the woman, Jaya Pawar, to Sassoon Hospital where she delivered a baby boy.

Doctors at the Sassoon Hospital said both baby and Pawar survived as they were brought to the hospital in time. Control room in-charge Assistant Commissioner of Police U P Bangar said, “The response time to the call in this case was a little less than four minutes.”

In September, a man had called the control and informed it that he was going to commit suicide. Police reached the spot within five minutes and literally pulled him off the railway tracks when the train was fast approaching towards him.

Bangar added, “A call made to control room in time and quick response can save a life. We urge people to call up at 100 number without any fear.”
