Sanaa advances, Rushmi bites the dust in ITF women’s tennis

Kolkata, November 17 Wild-card Sanaa Bhambri took 88 minutes to beat compatriot Isha Lakhani 6-4, 7-5 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the NRE Coke ITF Women’s Challenger 2008 tennis tournament at the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA) courts today. Bhambri made a good start to break her opponent in the second game and held on to that lead to win the first set in 29 minutes. In the second set, she broke Lakhani in the seventh and 11th game to win the match in straight set.

Another wild-card from India Rushmi Chakravarthi, however, was shown the door by Suchanan Viratprasert of Thailand 6-4, 6-1. Ankita Bhambri too lost 6-2, 6-2 in the first round against eighth seed Kai-Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei. Sophie Ferguson of Australia won a thriller against Brazilian Vivian Segnini in 136 minutes 6-4, 7-5.

Earlier today, state sports minister Subhas Chakraborty inaugurated the tournament in presence of former tennis greats like Akhtar Ali.
