sports round-up: All India junior tennis tourney to kick off on December 17

Solaris will host the All-India Ranking Championship series tennis tournament starting December 17 at their facility in Kothrud. This is the fifth edition of the tournament and 350 players are expected to feature in this tournament. The qualifying rounds will be held on December 15 and 16, while the main draw will commence on the 17th and conclude on the December 21. The winner of the tournament will gain 25 All India Tennis Association (AITA) points, the runner-up will pocket 20 points and semi-finalists 15 points. The total prize money is pegged at Rs 1 lakh.

Maharashtra shines at badminton school nationals

MAharashtra came away with a rich haul of medals from the School National Badminton tournament conducted in the age groups U-14, U-17 and U-19 at Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh. The Maharashtra school’s team won five gold medals in the team events and also snapped up three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals in individual events. Revati Devasthale was an important cog in the Maharashtra U-19 team’s performance and she further added to her reputation by bagging the gold medal in u-19 individual event. Rishabh Deshpande another player from the city won the silver medal in the U-14 boys singles category.

Harbinger opens with victory

Harbinger won its opening match of the Inter IT Cricket Cup played at the Varroc Vengsarkar Academy ground against Ideas by 26 runs. Batting first Harbinger put on 141 runs in 19.5 overs. Amit Kushthe was Harbinger’s top scorer with a measured 53 runs. In reply IdeaS could only manage 115 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Gaurav Nevrekar snapped up three wickets giving away just 12 runs to put the brakeson Ideas scoring. In other matches, KPIT Cummins prevailed over IBM by six wickets. Batting first IBM scored 130 runs in their 20 overs. KPIT Cummins with the help of Saurabh Mulik’s unbeaten 61 overhauled the target in 17.4 overs.In the match between Siemens and HSBC, the bankers ran out winners by 51 runs. HSBC batting first put on a strong 165 runs for the loss of five wickets with the help of Sanjay Lokhande who blazed a belligerent 86. Siemens could manage 114 runs in 19.2 overs. In the last match, Tech Mahindra won with four balls to spare. Sungard scored 145 runs batting first, but Tech Mahindra chased the target with the help of Gaurav Tyagi’s 60 and Sachin Pimprikar’s 31 runs.

Anglo Urdu thrash SSPMS B

Anglo Urdu High School registered a comprehensive 10 wicket win over SSPMS ‘B’ to record a second consecutive win in the Goel Ganga Trophy U-16 Inter School Cricket Tournament being organized by Pune District Cricket Association(PDCA). In the other match Vimlabai Garware High school recorded a 3 wicket win over Abasaheb Atre School in their first match . Hasan Badami of Anglo Urdu High School wrecked the SSPMS batting line up to claim 4 wickets for 16 runs and ensure the SSPMS team folded for just 51 runs in 12.3 overs. Anglo Urdu High School scored the required runs in just 4.4 overs, thanks to a quickfire 26 by Meerabbas Rawatner .

Brief scores: SSPMS B 51 all out in 12.3 overs (S Kumbhar 15; H Badami 5/4, S Ghaisawar 2/5) lost to Anglo Urdu High School 53 runs in 4.4 overs (M Rawatner 26 n.o)

Abasaheb Atre School 99 all out in 20 overs (K Pise 33 n.o, S Koli 24; A Kamble 4/8, N Kalokhe 2/9) lost to Vimlabai Garware Prashala: 103 for 7 in 18.5overs (A Rathod 26, A Pawar 15n.o; R Virat 2/13, S Yennurwar 2/22).
