Terming the retrenchment of 626 labourers illegal, Bose said the state government would decide on the steps to be taken against the “law violators” after going through the status report.
Labour department officials will speak to the central labour commissioner, Bose said following a meeting with representatives of Trinamool-controlled Nationalist HBC contractor labourers’ union who complained to the state government that 626 employees were retrenched by HBT without giving any reason.
“The agency retrenched them by sending SMSes to their mobile phones. Nowhere in the country can workers be retrenched by sending SMSes,” Bose said.
“HBT had entered a contract with Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) for cargo handling operations for 10 years. Workers were appointed after signing the agreement. So it is presumed that the workers are hired for 10 years. When it comes to retrenching a worker, the employer has to send a notice three months in advance. But this was not followed by HBT. We will discuss this violation with the central labour commissioner,” he added.
