Student threatens to set college principal on fire

Kolkata A student threatened to set on fire the principal of a South Kolkata college allegedly over an admission row. Chand Prakash Singh, a first year student of the Heramba Chandra College, the day section of South City College, poured petrol over principal Khagendra Nath Adhikari at 2.30 pm today. Chand is a member of the All India Student Bloc, student wing of the Forward Bloc, the students said.

According to the guidelines of the Calcutta University, the admission process should have been completed by July 31. However, more than 100 seats were not filled — though the merit list still had names of a few students yet to get admission. A section of students were pressurising the college authorities for admission of these students.

The students were today protesting against the authorities and Adhikari was trying to pacify them when Chand first poured petrol over himself and then attacked the principal. College officials then intervened to bring the situation under control.

Adhikari said: “We will take strict action against the student.” An FIR was also lodged against Chand at the Lake police station.
