Is your role in the show Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Ki Jo similar to roles you have portrayed earlier?
I play the role of Sumitra— Loha Singh’s wife. She is a quiet, motherly, cultured and religious woman who takes care of the family and is petrified of her husband. It is another strong character I portray in terms of supporting my family. What I like about it is that it’s etched out perfectly from start to end. There are no loopholes.
How was the experience of working on this show?
I’m old school; I like the fact that the director of the show also belongs to that era. He is a no-nonsense person who gets his work done on time. It is a disciplined unit and it is a pleasure working with such a crew.
Television has a lot of shows based on the girl child. What do you think of this trend?
I believe that television has a certain responsibility and duty to depict the reality of India. And this is one section which needs maximum attention. And the filmmakers are doing a brilliant job of portraying it.
You rose to popularity with BR Chopra’s Mahabharata. Why did you bid adieu to television?
After the popularity I achieved, I wanted to do more films. But I didn’t get too many offers. That’s the reason I decided to move back to Kolkata. I also got married then and soon had a child. So I continued doing movies in Kolkata because career-wise it was less demanding. Now my son is 11 years old and he can manage a few days without me.
The role of Draupadi was iconic. How do you look at that phase of your life?
Those were probably the best years of my life. It was a conglomeration of youth and it was the effort put in by each and everyone that made Mahabharata such a huge success. I am only honoured to be associated with it even 20 years hence.
Were you offered a role in Ekta Kapoor’s Kahaani Hamaray Mahabharat Ki?
Yes, of course she did. I was offered the role of Kunti, which is the second best role but I couldn’t take it up because of a few personal commitments.
What’s next on the agenda?
Two of my films, of which one is the recently released Chowrasta. Also, I am busy shooting for this serial. I have also written three scripts. I look to start direction in the next three to four months.
