Todi brothers call in ‘sick’, sent to jail hospital

Kolkata The Todi brothers, prime accused in Rizwanur Rehman death case, are now falling “sick” one after the other in Presidency Central jail as the Calcutta High Court refused their numerous bail pleas.

Ashok Todi, who complained of poor health after his arrest, was taken to the SSKM Hospital on Wednesday for a check up. His brother, Pradip Todi, meanwhile, has also complained of deteriorating health and is spending his time in relative luxury in the jail hospital. He, too, was taken to SSKM Hospital on Wednesday for a check up.

Ashok Todi, who was on Wednesday referred to the Alipur Central Jail, however, did not go.

“When Ashok Todi was brought to the jail, he complained of breathlessness. We took him to the jail hospital. Our doctors attended and advised him to stay in the hospital since he was not in a condition to stay with other inmates,” said a senior jail officer.

“The same thing happened with Pradip. He was sent to SSKM Hospital for a check up,” he added.

From mineral water to home-cooked food, the Todi brothers have it all.

Inside Hospital 1, away from the barracks which houses regular convicts and undertrials, inmates are kept to take orders of the duo.

The accused, according to sources, regularly meets visitors at the office of the Jail Superintendent Khairul Anam for hours daily — though he is not allowed to meet anyone without official permission.

HC grants bail to Pappu

The Calcutta High Court granted bail to Moinuddin alias Pappu, a Rehman family friend, and an accused in the Rizwanur Rehman murder case.

Pappu’s counsel Tarique Kasimuddin pleaded that he had surrendered before the CBI court on October 27 and was not absconding. He had followed the order of the CBI court and his conduct was good, said Kasimuddin. Pappu had already been lodged in the jail for 57 days, said the counsel.

Kasimuddin also pointed out that Pappu was family friend and had helped Rizwanur when he was facing difficulties after his marriage with Priyanka Todi.

After the hearing, Justice D P Sengupta granted bail to Pappu and imposed a condition to appear in the trial court during hearing. The HC also ordered that he will not be allowed to go abroad until the case is disposed.
