Kolkata Train services were affected on Kharagpur-Tata section of South Eastern Railway (SER) on Thursday morning after a group of 300 people squatted on the tracks at Gidni.

Supporters of Gidni Block Nagarik Committee were demanding introduction of new trains between Howrah and Gidhi, extension of Howrah-Jhargram train service to Ghatshila and allowing some express trains to stop at Gidni.

While trains like Kharagpur-Tata passenger, Howrah-Tata Steel Express, Tata-Kharagpur passenger were cancelled, Mumbai-Howrah Geetanjali Express, Ahmedabad-Howrah Express, LTT-Shalimar Express and New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani had to be diverted. Four other trains were terminated.

“Protests, including rail track blockades, have taken place before also. But they have always been restricted to token protests but today things went out of hand with the agitators squatting on the train lines for hours. Their demand for stoppages at Gidni is unjustified. Such protests are politically motivated,” said an official of the SER.
