Trinamool councillors hold up Mayor for six hours

Kolkata After a 16-hour gherao of Municipal Commissioner Arnab Roy on Saturday, Trinamool Congress councillors on Monday gheraoed Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattcharya in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters for six hours, demanding that the KMC budget be scrapped since a new body will take charge soon.

Prior to agitating in the Municipal Commissioner’s chamber, Trinamool councillors led by Javed Ahmed Khan, leader of the Opposition, submitted a deputation to Governor M K Narayanan. “At a time when the municipal polls are due in June, presenting the KMC budget is illegal. The ruling CPM has presented the budget to reap advantage in the upcoming polls. We will continue with the agitation until the budget is withdrawn,” said Khan.

He added, “We will submit a deputation to the principal secretary of the state Municipal Affairs department. We will visit the Governor again and discuss the issue. The movement will continue.”

The civic authorities have, however, shown no signs of withdrawing the budget.

“The budget was presented following rules and regulations mentioned in the KMC Act 1980. There is a provision of presenting the budget even if polls are due. We have asked the opposition to go in for a legal suit if they think the budget is illegal,” said Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
