UP puts some fresh faces in Parliament

Lucknow The fact that the people of the state have opted to send as many as 40 first timers in the Parliament shows there is a quest for fresh faces. In the process, they have rejected 35 sitting parliamentarians, who were trying their luck again.

“The verdict clearly marks the beginning of end of the politics of identity, muscle power and negativity,” said Dr Ramesh Dixit, professor of political science at the Lucknow University.

“The people have rejected a large number of ambitious politicians, who treated politics like a trade and were just running behind profits.”

Looking at the results closely, one would see that caste politics has worked very little in this election, he said. People have made it clear that if leaders like Mayawati or Mulayam Singh do not learn to change themselves with time, “they will be in big trouble”.

Homemakers who have made it to the parliament for the first time include Sarika Singh, RLD candidate from Hathras. Sarika (29), has won the election by making women’s rights and education her chief agenda.

Raj Kumari Singh Chauhan, wife of Jai Veer Singh, state Minister in the Mayawati government, has won from Aligarh against the sitting Congress MP and the Muslim candidate of SP. This was her first election ever and she has directly made it to the parliament. Seema Upadhyay, the wife of state power minister Ram Veer Upadhyay, has also won the election from Fatehpur Sikri, defeating Congress candidate Raj Babbar.

On the other hand, Kaiser Jahan, wife of a BSP legislator, has won from Sitapur.

Even the victory of a first-timer, Annu Tandon, who has a corporate background, is an exception. It was her first election — from Unnao on Congress ticket.

And she has won the election with a record margin of over three lakh votes. Among the legislators who have made it to the parliament for the first time are Pradeep Jain Aditya and RPN Singh of Congress and Kadir Rana of BSP.

Yet another unlikely candidate made it to the parliament is Kamal Kishore — popularly know as “Commando” because he served for around seven years as commando in Rajiv Gandhi’s security, from 1980 till Rajiv’s death in 1991.

His victory came as a surprise to seasoned Congressmen. Party sources, however, say his closeness to the Gandhi family proved a boon. The locals of Behraich, from where he contested, thought he would be able to take their problems to the Center in a better way.

“Commando ka jitna kafi logon ke liye surprise tha aur ab to usko ministry dene ki baten bhi chal rahi hai,” said a senior Congress leader. The reason, he said, is that he is one of the two Dalit leaders to win on Congress ticket in the state. The other one is PL Punia, who can fill the space of Mahaveer Prasad.

Despite being a senior BJP leader, even Lalji Tandon will be a first-timer in the parliament after winning from prestigious Lucknow seat, occupied so far by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

On the other hand, there is a long list of sitting MPs who have been dethroned.

The names include seasoned politicians like Mahaveer Prasad from Bansgaon, Saleem Sherwani from Badaun, Surendra Prakash Goyal from Ghaziabad, Raj Babbar from Fatehpur Sikri and Baleshwar Yadav, who contested on Congress ticket. In the BJP, there are Ashok Pradhan, Santosh Gangwar and Pankaj Chaudhary. The SP list includes Akshay Pratap Singh, Mohan Singh and Daroga Prasada Saroj.

Even the tag of the ruling BSP could not help Mohd Tahir from Sultanpur, Mitrasen from Faizabad, Kirti Varshan Singh and Lalmani Prasad win.
