The policemen, who are lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, could not leave for Mumbai on Thursday because the court summons reportedly reached the jail authorities late. Sources said a team of Mumbai police had arrived in Sabarmati Jail in the morning and the accused policemen were to leave for Mumbai in the afternoon.
R J Pargi, the jail superintendent, said, “The delay happened due to administrative lapse. We received the court summons late and were left with little time to arrange for police escorts. Although it was arranged by late evening, the accused could not be taken for Friday’s hearing. We will plan further according to what Mumbai court says on Friday.”
Pargi said a bus had been arranged to ferry the 11 jailed policemen, which include D G Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian, Dinesh MN, N K Amin and Abhay Chudasama, to Mumbai.
He said a team of 36 police officers would escort the accused to Mumbai.
Former minister of state (home) Amit Shah, who is one of the 19 accused in the case, is out on bail. “I have not received any summons from Mumbai and hence I am not going,” he said when asked if he was going to the Mumbai court on Friday.
