With there not being many roads connecting Chandigarh and Panchkula, there is heavy vehicular traffic on the stretch between Transport lightpoint and Housing Board lightpoint. During morning and evening hours, the situation is chaotic. With cars and school buses jostling for space with trucks, it becomes difficult to commute on the stretch.
“We received a verbal communication from the UT Home Department 15 days back asking if the restriction on movement of heavy vehicles be made a regular feature. We sent a positive reply in the matter and are now waiting for the orders from administration so we can implement it as soon as possible,” said Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Maneesh Chaudhary.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kamal Deep said, “We have taken the consent of the shopkeepers of the Grain Market, Sector 26. They are also in favour of blocking the traffic for two hours in the morning.”
When contacted, UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar said, “We have received a yes for the proposal from the SP traffic. However, I am yet to take up the issue with the higher authorities.”
The UT Administration had blocked the movement of traffic beyond the Transport lightpoint on the road from Madhya Marg leading to the Housing Board and the Zirakpur-Chandigarh road up to Sector 29-Sector 31 roundabout. From 8 am to 10 am, the heavy vehicles were banned from entering the city.
The DSP said, “The traffic woes of Panchkula residents working in Chandigarh were very much solved in that one month. A written report was sent by the then DSP Vijay Kumar, which was in favour of the experiment.”
