An Indian and his lady lover from Indonesia have been sentenced to 60 lashes and two-month jail term, for having illicit relationship, by a sharia court in Rasal Khaimah.

But the lovers could save themselves from the punishment if they agree to marry each other, the Gulf News daily reported on Saturday.

The Indian, who was identified only as a.m., has petitioned the court saying he was willing to marry the women if he was spared of the penalty.

He also agreed to be deported but the woman said she wanted to continue to work in the U.A.E.

The court accepted his plea and agreed to drop the charges if he tied the wedding knot.

The two were nabbed in a compromising position on April 15 in a house, the daily reported.
