Leander Paes has been appointed Davis Cup captain after former player Ramesh Krishnan quit for personal reasons.

The 30-year-old Paes, out of action since August following treatment for a non-malignant brain lesion, will be a playing captain, All India Tennis Association (AITA) secretary Anil Khanna said on Saturday.

Khanna said Krishnan wanted to quit the job he took up in 1999 to travel with his tennis playing daughter Gayatri and spend more time with his family.

Paes, India's leading Cup player, is expected to return to action by January and will guide the side for the first time in February's Asia-Oceania Group I tie in New Zealand.
