Indian Express journalist Muzamil Jaleel gets Sanskriti Award

The prestigious Sanskriti Awards for notable contributions in the field of literature, art, performing arts, journalism and social work were conferred on Bharat Majhi, Shilpa Gupta, Bimabavati Devi, Muzamil Jaleel and a women's organisation North East Network working in Assam and other north-eastern states.

Muzamil Jaleel was the recipeint of Sanskriti Award in the field of journalism for his stories on Kashmir.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diskhit gave the Sanskriti Award for Literature to poet Bharat Majhi who has lent a voice to the misery of the tribals of Kalahandi in Orissa and the social and political apathy towards them.

Bimabavati Devi, an accomplished Manipuri dancer, was recognised for carrying forward the finer qualities of classical Manipuri dance.

With innovative use of new materials and methods, Shilpa Gupta who was conferred with Sanskriti Award for Art, explores the social life of objects.

North East Network (NEN), working for women's empowerment, was recognised for providing local livelihood and focussing on health scenario.

The Sanskriti awards have entered their silver jubilee year.
