CENTRAL Government has upgraded Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway to the status of National Highway. This information was conveyed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad personally on phone today.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, while conveying the news, told the Chief Minister that a notification declaring Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road as National Highway has been issued by the concerned ministry.

The demand had been pending in the Union Ministry for a long time and Azad had recently taken up the issue with the Prime Minister requesting him for an early declaration of Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road as National Highway.

Conferring the status of National Highway on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road will provide greater impetus to the development of the road and help make it operational for longer duration with added comforts to the commuters and passengers besides the tourists who visit Leh and Kargil via this road.

Azad thanked Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for this gesture and also conveyed his gratitude to him for showing a keen interest in the development of Jammu and Kashmir. Granting the highest ever budget this year, providing unprecedented financial support for power sector, Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan, extending many more centrally sponsored schemes to the state are examples of Centre’s concern for the state, he said.

The Chief minister said the liberal Central assistance and the personal interest in the development of the state shown by the central leadership, like, Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, would help in a big way to usher in an era of Khushali in the state.
