ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

NEW DELHI, August 11: Sick units across the country owe as much as Rs 13,748 crore as outstanding to various commercial banks. Giving this information to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Industry Minister Murasoli Maran said out of the total outstanding, Rs 3721.94 crore is accounted by 2,62,376 SSI sick units, Rs 8823.19 by non-SSI sick units who number 1,956 and Rs 1203.12 by 418 "non-SSI weak" units.

The Minister said the industry-wise position of sickness indicates that industrial units in textiles, engineering, chemicals, iron and steel, paper and electrical sectors are the ones most affected.

He said a number of causes , both internal and external, often operating in combination, were responsible for industrial sickness. Main causes, however, include deficiencies in planning, management, marketing technology etc.

The minister said a number of steps to tackle the problem of industrial sickness have been initiated.
